Dinosaur / Jurassic Themed Cake

Kia Ora again! It's great to be back, and it definitely feels like we are well on track again for the year. So for a quick update on our recent adventures - Jane has just finished 1 month of her Small Business course, still a while to go, but she's learning a great deal and we're very excited about all the trade secrets she is discovering. Joy is 16 weeks pregnant today! Because we both work full-time, Joy has now once again deferred from her Masters degree programme - and this is so she can help Jane more with the our cakescapades. So, bring on the cake-athons!!!

This week, Max turned 5. Here's the cakescape:

For a close up look of the volcano (milk chocolate mud cake with creamy milk-chocolate ganache) baked from scratch (as always), with 5 sparkly candles stuck to the crater:

There was T-Rex of course, the king of the Jurassic jungle:

Dinosaur #2: Triceratops at the foot of the volcano:

Dinosaur #3: a thirsty Stegosaurus:

Dinosaur # 4: Brachiosaurus - a happy yellow one!

Dinosaur #5: Brontosaurus, frolicking in the water...

There you go, 5 hand-sculpted edible dinosaurs for a big 5-year old boy. Happy birthday Max!

Elmo Cake

With 1/2 of Sweet Art Cakes attempting to finish a Masters Degree this year, and the other 1/2 also enrolled in a Certificate in Small Business Management at the same time, we've had to have a self-enforced down time in terms of baking and cake styling for the first quarter of the year.

But now, it finally feels like we are getting the hang of this new pace of life. It's busy - but focused. This week, we've had another reason to stay focused: a 2 year old boy, Gab, who adores Elmo.

Norm's bible birthday cake

Daisy, Norm’s wife who is also a cake-decorator, asked us to make a surprise cake for his 82nd birthday. She wanted a Bible cake. Very fitting because he got baptized a few months ago. His favourite verse is Matthew 15:11, “Not that which goeth into the mouth that defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”

LOL moment: Just after we presented the cake, Norm told us he’s not cutting it, he’s keeping it. “I can’t eat the Bible,” he said. To which their home stay student replied, “But, Norm, it’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, it’s what comes out of it.” ;D

Suffice to say, we ate the cake!

Happy 82nd birthday, Norm! We look forward to making many more birthday cakes for you! Thank you for joining us in this sugary-sweet journey!

Finnegan Cole's Mickey Mouse cake

Here's a cake we did for our dear friends' beautiful son, Finnegan Cole's first birthday.

Daddy loves Mickey, so Finnie had to have Mickey in his party. Mommy loves choc mudcakes so his cake had to be. Lower tier is a milk choc mudcake covered and filled with milk choc ganache. Upper tier is a white choc mudcake  with white choc ganache. Yes, in this cake are 13 blocks of Whittaker's milk and white chocolates! Oohh la la!

His great aunties were so excited they bought all the Mickey Mouse party things for him... To Finn with love from the UK! :D Such a lucky little boy!

Here's the cake:

There's Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy! It's a party!

A very happy 1st birthday to you, Finn! What an awesome party you had!

Chesca's Dora cake

Happy 2012 everyone! We know we owe you all some blogging, yes, we've missed you too! Life happened. :) We hope the holiday season was as sweetly eventful for you as it has been for us. As per our facebook page, we did close our tiny kitchen over the holidays which allowed us to spend precious time with family and friends.

Now, we're ready for another year of baking, designing, caking, and prettifying life!

Here's our first cake for 2012: A two-tier Dora cake for a cutie little girl's second birthday.
