Dora cake - take 3!

There hasn't been much baking happening round here, unfortunately... but for intentional reasons: we recently moved to a new place - more space, whew! Joy is now 29 weeks pregnant (and still teaching), Jane is in her 3rd module at business school, Kenneth is now permanently busy with his various home improvement projects... on top of our usual full time jobs.
Not much caking fun, but we are grateful nevertheless.

Here's a quick peek into our most recent project...

Now we know just how influential this Dora character is... this is the third Dora cake we have done so far, and won't be surprised if we get more. The little ones really do aDORe her!
Rhaeleen is such a pretty name! Long, but pretty. Her mum was quite specific about white, pink and purple being the central colour theme. The yellow is just to break the tone.
Above: a view from the top... and finally...
"Hello!!! The party was good, yes Rhaeleen loved the cake! She keeps blowing the candle and asking wheres Dora cake? Thanks again!" - Rhaeleen's Mum & Dad - Lyn & John.

A Story of "Love"

This entry is dedicated to the romantic in all of us.
A word of warning: this story will make you fall in love. It did us.

This week, we had the gift of being part of an unfolding.
We enjoyed creating this cake,
even though we cannot truly take the full credit for its design.
We were given specific instructions, you see:

1. There were to be tropical/palm trees.
2. There was to be a smiling, loveable turtle on the top of the cake.
 3. There was to be sand... like the beach.
And a sign saying: "Happy Birthday Love, love you heaps!" - TJ
4. The cake was to be a picture of paradise.
5. Because it was to be a vessel for this:
Jane & her fiance, Arvee, were honored
to have the privilege of witnessing this great moment.
When they delivered the cake (nb., we prefer delivering our creations ourselves),
"Love" (the name of our story's heroine, if you haven't already figured out)
was on her way to pick "TJ" up from the airport
after a 2-week work-related trip to Brissy.
In short, our delivery staff of the day were invited to stay
for their intimate family gathering
to apparently 'celebrate Love's birthday'.
Everyone was in on the decoy - except Love.

She said "YES" of course!
And they shall live happily ever after.

The 'Happy' (Yellow) Birthday Cake

This week, one of Joy's workmates had her birthday.
Her name is Tanya and it apparently means 'fairy queen'.
Well, she is a fairy queen in many ways, and so fittingly... this cake:
The cake is a milk-chocolate mud cake all smothered in milk-chocolate ganache.
Tanya's favourite flowers are roses and she loves butterflies too.
Hence, the sugar butterflies fluttering about the hand-crafted sugar roses.
Why yellow? Because she's always cheerful!
In Tanya's own words: "Oh, that cake! It's just exquisite!"
A very happy birthday, Tanya!

Eeyore 3D

Yet another FIRST for Sweet Art Cakes: a 3D cake. When we were first approached by the birthday girl's doting Aunty, the original plan was to make our usual round cake with the 3D sculptured icing topper. So, we gave her a quote for this. Later she came back with another idea - to make Eeyore 'the cake'! Great idea - except, we've never done one like this before...

After some discussion, we agreed to take up the challenge but still kept the agreed price quote. Our reason is that, even though we knew it was going to cost us much more in materials and working hours, we weren't too sure if we were going to be able to 'deliver' with the same quality as we always aspire to.  So, did we deliver? You be the judge:

The flavour: milk chocolate mud cake smothered in milk-chocolate ganache. The size: at a total of two 6x6 round cakes, this cake is quite literally 'choc-a-bloc'!!!

Jane made some sugar flowers to prettify the whole look and add some other colour. And how sweet is that little butterfly sitting so pretty on Eeyore's nose?

Aaaaawwwwww!!! Melts your heart, doesn't it? And for a last glance:

Jane had the opportunity to deliver this cake to the birthday girl as we were on our way to Sunday lunch. It's always a special experience when we get to see the look on people's faces as soon as they lay their eyes on any of our cakes - awesomeness!!!

Happy birthday, Aian! And we're pleased that you loved your Eeyore cake. Now, good luck getting yourself to cut it! LOL!!! Thank you for joining us in this sugary sweet journey.

Dinosaur / Jurassic Themed Cake

Kia Ora again! It's great to be back, and it definitely feels like we are well on track again for the year. So for a quick update on our recent adventures - Jane has just finished 1 month of her Small Business course, still a while to go, but she's learning a great deal and we're very excited about all the trade secrets she is discovering. Joy is 16 weeks pregnant today! Because we both work full-time, Joy has now once again deferred from her Masters degree programme - and this is so she can help Jane more with the our cakescapades. So, bring on the cake-athons!!!

This week, Max turned 5. Here's the cakescape:

For a close up look of the volcano (milk chocolate mud cake with creamy milk-chocolate ganache) baked from scratch (as always), with 5 sparkly candles stuck to the crater:

There was T-Rex of course, the king of the Jurassic jungle:

Dinosaur #2: Triceratops at the foot of the volcano:

Dinosaur #3: a thirsty Stegosaurus:

Dinosaur # 4: Brachiosaurus - a happy yellow one!

Dinosaur #5: Brontosaurus, frolicking in the water...

There you go, 5 hand-sculpted edible dinosaurs for a big 5-year old boy. Happy birthday Max!
