Dabbling with royal icing

March 2010: We were getting a bit bored of the usual fondant-finished cakes. So, when a friend invited us to her birthday party (which she celebrated in combination with her mum's), we offered to bring a cake... no fondant this time. ;p She likes pink, her mum likes red.

Cake: strawberry yoghurt pound cake, buttercream-finished, royal icing details.

We had some leftover cake mixture which we wanted to make cupcakes with but we'd ran out of paper cups. Improvisation! We made cylindrical baking paper. We thought it was a brilliant idea, of course, until the silicone moulds decided to twist in the heat and pop the paper up. It was a really awkward shape, something we'd never seen before! ;D There was nothing left to do but decorate them and make it look like it was part of the design itself. Just like so,

Thank you for joining us in this sugary-sweet journey!
